Overview

The Water Treatment Plant has a permitted capacity of 20 Million Gallons per Day (20 MGD).  It provides high-quality drinking water to the residents and businesses of Traverse City and portions of Garfield, Elmwood, and Peninsula Townships.  Daily demand ranges from under 3 MGD in the winter months to nearly 14 MGD during prolonged dry spells during the summer months.

Our Water Source

The City’s drinking water source is Lake Michigan.  The water filtration plant treats the raw lake water to meet EPA and state-regulated drinking water standards.
